The Joy of Creativity: Say, "Goodbye" to Stress by Making a Self-Symbol in Nature

Self-Symbol by Elizabeth Bryan-Jacobs

Creating a Self-Symbol in nature is a simple, powerful practice that supercharges the benefits of creativity and Mother Earth.  It is also a wonderful path to deeper insight and understanding into your inner and outer worlds.

  1. Quiet your mind: Find a peaceful spot, take 2 – 3 minutes to sit down, close your eyes and connect with your breath.
  2. Head outside with a small bag or pouch:  Whether you’re in your backyard, the woods or at the beach, scan for natural objects that you are drawn to: bark, flowers, leaves, blades of grass, small stones or shells. Follow your intuition; there is no right or wrong. Consider these questions: what might you use to represent your heart? Your brain? Your arms and legs?
  3. Find a special spot: Decide where you’d like your self-symbol to be born. If possible, sit down on the earth.
  4. Take two more minutes to feel the earth beneath you.  Touch the ground with your hand. Connect with your breath and go inward.
  5. Get creative! You may want to create your full body, or focus on only one part. You may consider expressing positive or negative aspects; whatever you decide, it doesn’t matter. There are no rules to making your self-symbol. Be spontaneous and intuitive – remember, no one is watching:). Keep going until you feel “complete.”
  6. Reflect on your Self-Symbol, and open to these questions: What does your Self-Symbol mean to you? Do the natural materials have any special significance? Which ones in particular, and why? What positive aspects or strengths can you see? Any challenges?
  7. If you are moved to do so, photograph your Self-Symbol. Know that “she” or “he” will be returning to nature.
  8. Notice any feelings of well-being, peace or gratitude that have arisen as a result of this practice.

Whether you make a Self-Symbol, a stone circle, or simply write an empowering word in the dirt, any combination of creativity and nature will bring a sense of greater joy and connection.  Visit my Joy of Creativity blog to share the full journey of my self-symbol.  And remember:  Creative time is your time: it’s a gift that you deserve!
