“The dream is the small hidden door in the deepest and most inner sanctum of the soul” – Carl Jung
In 2016, I had a dream that told me to pay attention to my dreams. While I had no idea how my life would transform, I listened to the call. Since the beginning of recorded time, spiritual and world wisdom traditions have consulted their dreams for guidance, insight, healing, relationships, spirituality, creative endeavors and nearly all aspects of life.
This great mystery that is available to every human being has been called many things, including the voice of the Soul, the voice of God, and a personal, inner sage. Whatever we believe, this nightly gift is a veritable treasure trove of guidance served up through imagery, symbol and metaphor, a language known to us way before the written word.
There are many wonderful methods to interpreting our dreams. With the work of Carl Jung as a foundation, I combine arts-based techniques with contemplative practices like ritual and meditation adapted from ancient and modern practices. These include guided meditations to amplify dream details and personalized rituals to contain dream content.
Because dreams communicate through images, art-making is the cornerstone of my approach. In doing so, we speak and respond to the unconscious in its own language, deepening the conversation. Our understanding of what the dream would like us to know becomes much more apparent, bringing it even more deeply into conscious awareness. In this way, the symbols and images offered by our dreams can act as a bridge to our deepest knowing.
No artistic experience is needed for this work, which can be as simple as finding images in magazines or online that call to us, and using those as the basis for art-making.
Dream imagery is shaped by individual experience, background and cultural context. This makes dreamwork a therapeutic journey of two travelers in which the dreamer’s associations and interpretation always holds sway. By unearthing this deeply personalized wisdom we are given each night, and ultimately embracing what we receive as truth, we can heal psychic wounds and journey towards wholeness. We can live in far deeper connection to ourself and the world.
Whether you have little dream recall or wonderful dream recall, the practices I share can support you in hearing and following the guidance of this great and humbling mystery. Please inquire here to learn more or to schedule a free consultation.
